New research soon to be published in the Journal of Happiness Studies reports finding that women become unhappier than men in later life. 

Anke Plagnol of the University of Cambridge and Richard Easterlin of the University of Southern California authored this study, the first to use national data spanning several decades. They examine how unfulfilled desires contribute to a person’s well-being.

Women, according to their study, begin happier than men but lose this edge after age 48.  They determined that the differences are based on family and finances.

Men tend to be less happy as young adults when they are single and earning starter wages. As they approach middle age men are more likely to be married and reaching the peak of their earning power which leads to them being happier.

By contrast, as women approach middle age they are nearing the end of their childrearing days and now have to redefine their lives and goals which leads them to being less happy.
