About This Site
Everyone seems to be looking for happiness, but not many people find it, especially in Western civilization. That’s because so many of us were brought up to believe that it’s outside ourselves. Others of us were brought up to believe that happiness is for others, but not attainable for us. Some were even misled to believe they don’t deserve happiness and thus should settle for leading what Thoreau called “quiet lives of desperation.”
I’m Flora Morris Brown–widow, mother, grandma, writer, teacher, and lover of theater and travelling. This site is dedicated to helping you discover that happiness is not something you find, but something you must be. Many authors, poets, songwriters and movies have offered ideas on happiness. Some of them may have offered paths that worked for you. I offer this site as another set of ideas that I hope you will embrace and put to work for you.
By happiness I don’t mean giddiness, a continual state of laughter, a string of positive affirmations, or mindless glee. I use happiness to mean a deep joy that comes from making good choices in your life. Good choices are those that enable you to do what you is fun, fulfilling and pleasurable to you. Happiness is also choosing to stop doing what you don’t like and avoiding toxic people and draining situations.
Being happy does not spare you from encountering unhappy, mean and evil people and incidents. Bad things will happen to happy people. But being happy causes you to choose how you want to react to these things when they occur.
Being happy and finding your inner joy does not mean you’ll never get upset, feel sad or experience grief. It just means you won’t stay that way.
On this site I’ll cover many and varied topics that make me happy. I may share what I’m reading, movies, comment on what’s happening in the world or in my life. I hope that you’ll talk back to me by leaving comments.
When I talk to you I’ll also be talking to me. I welcome you to join me in experiencing happiness.

Hello Flora,
I found your site via a post you made on an art therapy blog. I am wondering if you used to teach gift basket classes and write gift basket books? I used to own an online gift basket company and there was a Flora Brown who was a well known name in the industry. Could that be you?
I have since sold my gift business and gone back to my music therapy practice. Interestingly, I too just wrote my first e-book. It is called Prelude to Coda: Creating a Successful Creative Arts Therapy Practice.
If you are indeed the Flora Brown I am speaking of it sure is a small world, is it not?
